Modeling Sequential Information Acquisition Behavior in Rational Decision Making

چکیده
Most real-life decisions are made with less than perfect information and there is often some opportunity to acquire additional information to increase the quality of the decision. In this article, we define and study the sequential information acquisition process of a rational decision maker (DM) when allowed to acquire any finite amount of information from a set of products defined by vectors of characteristics. The information acquisition process of the DM depends both on the values of the characteristics observed previously and the number and potential realizations of the remaining characteristics. Each time an observation is acquired, the DM modifies the probability of improving upon the products already observed with the number of observations available. We construct two real-valued functions whose crossing points determine the decision of how to allocate each available piece of information. We provide several numerical simulations to illustrate the information acquisition incentives defining the behavior of the DM. Applications to knowledge management and decision support systems follow immediately from our results, particularly when considering the introduction and acceptance of new ∗The authors would like to thank the anonymous reviewers and the editor for their insightful comments and suggestions. Comparing Bandwidth and Self-control Modeling on Learning a Sequential Timing Task
Modeling is a process which the observer sees another person's behavior and adapts his/her behavior with that which is the result of interaction. The aim of present study was to investigate and compare effectiveness of bandwidth modeling and self-control modeling on performance and learning of a sequential timing task. So two groups of bandwidth and self-control were compared. The task was pres...

متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...
متن کاملAn optimal information acquisition model for competitive advantage in complex multiperspective environments
The optimal information acquisition process is a major strategic task for sustaining a firm’s competitive advantage. We define the optimal sequential information acquisition behavior of a rational decision maker (DM) when allowed to acquire two pieces of information from and observe positive credible signals on a set of multidimensional products. We illustrate how firm reputation affects the co...
متن کاملEffects of Interruptible Load on Decision Making of a Distribution Company in Competitive Environments
The main goal of this paper is to present a new day-ahead energy acquisition model for a distribution company (Disco) in a competitive electricity market environment with Interruptible Load (IL). The work formulates the Disco energy acquisition model as a bi-level optimization problem with some of real issues, and then studies and designs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) of this optimization problem to...
